What is Copelands?

An ultra-modern residential care facility situated in the charming coastal setting of Millisle, County Down, Northern Ireland. The project is yet another instance of BCM’s ongoing mission to deliver exceptional residential care to older NI habitants, including those living with diminished cognitive ability. Designed in accordance with University of Stirling’s Gold Standard in dementia, Copelands will offer residents unique services that stimulate a home-like experience to promote independence and opportunity.

The need

Designers opted for bison precast beams flooring systems throughout the facility due to the acoustic, fire resistance and thermal mass qualities they offer. Pre-cast concrete floors are also relatively faster, simpler, and cheaper to install than freshly poured cementitious slabs allowing developers to make substantial monetary savings that could be invested elsewhere in the project.

Whilst bison beam substrates deliver a plethora of advantages to the building and builder, they have an array of drawbacks too. Debatably, the most common problems pre-cast floors present is inconsistency of evenness when laid, jointing and surface defects such as blistering, surface scaling and cracking. Such issues hinder the installation of PIR insulative boards and defy manufacturers guidelines that state substrates should be levelled and free of debris. To continue installation of insulative board on slabs that do not comply with manufacturers guidelines would be regarded nonsensical, and potential malpractice. Furthermore, It creates all kinds of efficiency problems.  Debatably, the most common problems pre-cast floors present is inconsistency of evenness when laid, jointing and surface defects such as blistering, surface scaling and cracking. An alternative insulative solution was required that not only retained heat but corrected all the aforementioned problems associated with bison beams. Warmscreed, liquid engineering was selected to ensure the final result would be a smooth and level finish for the application of Under Floor Heating. Warmscreed has revolutionised the floor insulation industry with its time, labour and waste saving benefits in addition to providing a full fill insulative layer without thermal defaults.
